Psalm 58 is classed by scholars as a lament—a national lament decrying the injustice heaped upon the innocent at the hands of unjust rulers. As to whether these are foreign oppressors or corrupt national leaders there is a difference of opinion. But in either situation, the psalm provides encouragement for the oppressed.
